Showing gratitude is one of my key personal values and it affects everything I do in life, both personally and professionally.
It's all about going out of your way to say a genuine thanks to those who deserve it. It's about going out of your way to surprise.
I make it a point to say five genuine thank-yous every day. Showing genuine gratitude is both good for business and good for people.
- It gives people the incentive to go above and beyond. When people notice that you thank them for their efforts, they'll naturally work even harder to please you in the future.
- It reduces conflict and maintains civility.
- It makes people feel valued. In terms of business, customer retention is key to success - it costs far less to retain customers than it is to acquire new ones - and all it takes is simply making your customers feel valued and appreciated.
- It fosters loyalty and community. People like to feel supported and appreciated. If your gratitude is authentic, you will naturally develop stronger connections with your employees, clients and community.
Showing gratitude goes hand-in-hand with celebrating the success of others - whether that be your own team, your clients or those in your community.
This all leads me to sharing a brilliant success story with you all.
A long-time client of ours - Brendan Dover, owner of 'The Drain Man' - messaged me this week and announced that The Drain Man had been awarded the biggest HCB (House connection branch) contract in Australia!
Needless to say, I was ecstatic for his incredible achievement that we've been working towards for many years.
I immediately shared the fantastic news with my team, and now it gives me great pleasure to share this with you - our valued community.
It's important to celebrate these wonderful successes.
In fact, Brendan and I have been waiting since 2011 for a moment like this.Back then, Brendan bought a bottle of Wild Duck Creek Estate wine that we agreed was only to be opened when we had a worthy success like this to celebrate.
It has been in my cellar ever since, waiting for the right time.
There have been a few occasions over the last 7 years since when we considered opening it... but it didn't feel like it was truly earned.
This time, however, we're definitely cracking it open and celebrating with our families!
Brendan's brilliant success this week is the culmination of many, many years of hard work. He became a client of ours in 2007 when his business was being run, literally, over his kitchen sink.
Although there have been ups and downs over the long journey, he has always invested in improving his team, his business and himself. There have been times when he has been pushed to "the cliff's edge", so to speak, but instead of falling off the cliff, he's jumped to the next piece of solid ground.
The result is the benchmark business he has grown - and the enormous success he and his team have achieved.
Seeing our clients succeed makes what we do all worthwhile. I feel incredibly fortunate to have developed, and be a part of, our wonderful and supportive community of business owners.
So, celebrate and share in the success of others, and show gratitude and thanks to those who've helped you achieve your own success along the way.
It makes the journey that we call business all that more rewarding.
