How Precise is Your Organisational Alignment?

If you had to think twice about this question (or you’re not even sure what it means) then it is time to take stock.

If your business is not internally and externally aligned, it doesn’t matter how hard you and your team work – sales, profits and growth will not move forward.

So whether you are a five person operation or have fifty full time staff, take the time to ensure everyone is working towards the same goals and on the same track.

Set the five main priorities for your business

These priorities need to be concrete and specific. They should be one sentence each and they need to be the ‘nuts and bolts’ interpretation of where your mission or vision statement intersects with your business plan. Some examples of good priorities are: 

  • Increase profits by 100% in the next 12 months
  • Zero customer complaints
  • Increase market share

You can adjust priorities as time goes by but they should not be something that you are re-writing on a weekly basis.

They act as a rudder for your organisational alignment.

Keep it simple and communicate it clearly

Each and every member of your team needs to know these priorities and know their specific role in contributing to their realization (too often we carry passengers who are either lost or are enjoying the ride of too few). They need to be communicated in such a way that everyone understands them and are accountable to them – in a very clear and concrete way.

Make sure you communicate them effectively to all levels of your organization. It is not enough for management to know the top five priorities of your business.

Then name the number one priority

The best aligned organizations can name all five and the identify the top one of the business'priorities. This is the epicenter of everything from the culture of your workplace to your marketing messages, sales strategies and business plan.

Valued employees are happy employees. Your team needs to understand your organisational priorities but they will be more content, motivated and enterprising if their personal activities and goals are also included in the picture.

Where are your team members in their career paths? What professional development will help them grow and also help your business grow? What skills do they bring to your business that already complements your top priorities and what extra skills do you need them to develop?

Your activities impact directly on your results

Organisational alignment is not just about words on a page. It is about the actions you and your staff members take every day in the workplace. Don’t make the mistake of getting so caught up in ideas and theory that you fall behind in practice. In other words – don’t get caught up in ‘more’ knowing at the expense of ‘more’ doing.

Making MAPs

There are two kinds of MAPs that will assist your organisational alignment in action. Each team member should create a MAP (My Activities Plan), set by them, that is aligned with the bigger picture MAP (Management Accountability Plan) – set by you.

MAPs can be more fluid and flexible than your priorities as they relate to tasks and activities. They form the blueprint or structure for daily, weekly and monthly actions.

The top pocket checklist

This is the most specific and active part of your organizational alignment structure.

It is also the most simplistic for immediate results. Each team member writes down their top five priorities for the day. Check that list every 15 minutes and tick each task off as it is completed.

Given the fact that you are working on the most important tasks, it is important not to let despair take hold if only two or three tasks are achieved in a day, the others can wait. This is a valuable lesson in focus and time management. We tend to overestimate what we can do in 5 minutes and underestimate what we can do in 5 years.

The more skilled you become at managing and completing tasks to time, the more you will see results in terms of growth and progress.
