The concept of PURPOSE is integral to everything you do. This month we will be looking at purpose in different aspects of your business. Without a clear and unambiguous purpose across all aspects of your life and business, your dreams of being a profitable business owner will go unfulfilled, of that I can assure you. So, we are going to look at why you need a purpose for:

• You

• Your life

• Your business

• Your people

All these different purposes are related. Without a clear purpose in your personal life, you won’t have a clear purpose as a business leader. If you don’t have a clear purpose as a business leader there’s no way at all you will be able to instil a clear purpose in your people. It just can’t be done.

 YOUR PERSONAL PURPOSE

Having a positive self-image is crucial to success in anything in life. If you don’t truly believe that you can achieve something, you have no hope of doing so. Nobody else can push you through. Nobody else can provide the massive drive that is required to achieve your long-term dreams. I always tell clients that if my dreams for them and my belief in them is higher than their own, we have a problem. This is because I can provide them with all the information and tools they need for great success, but I can’t do it for them. I can’t make them power through when they would rather give up. Nobody can do this. It must come from within.

Some people are extreme optimists and play the game in the positive. They do a good job of avoiding their bald spots. Others are very negative – no matter how good they may be or how far they have progressed, they constantly look back and say, ‘I’m not good enough. That’s not for me’.

Are you a glass-half-full or glass-half-empty type of person? It’s important to know this about yourself.

If you are going to develop a positive self-image you must surround yourself with people who will help you get through, who are open and honest and trusting with you, and who truly believe in you. If you’re having a dip in your personal cycle you need these people to help you through. Being a Productivity Diamond is about helping yourself by understanding yourself, and understanding your people. To do this successfully, you must have a very clear and open and honest reflection of who you are and what you do. Your personal purpose is so important because your professional space is driven by your personal space.

 What is it that you need to achieve?

If I were to ask you to produce a list of outcomes that you need to achieve over the next 12 months, you need to have some level of belief, vision and self-discipline to know that you can follow through.

Try this exercise now. I call this ‘The List’. What do you need to achieve in the next 12 months?

Now, if you have a certain view of your goals and how you will achieve them, write down the top 10 reasons why you will achieve them, and then write down top 10 reasons why you won’t.

Now, have a look at these lists. What are you going to do to make sure the items on your positive list happen? And how are you going to avoid the things on your negative list?

Some of your goals for the next 12 months will be negative. These are things you need to move away from. Maybe you need to get past some team issues and hire that A-grader to go to the next level.

This is moving away from a negative issue. Self-image is a brother and sister to procrastination. You need to be in between procrastination and over-confidence – in a place called reality. It’s important to realise that having a positive self-image is not simply thinking you are awesome. It’s about having a quiet strength and confidence that you can get the job done, while knowing that you need to work hard to keep learning and to stay at the top of your game.

When self-image is positive this will lead to great results. If you have a weak self-image this will be the reason you don’t achieve. Positive talk is about self-image.

Remember, it’s about just getting on and creating value – let’s make it happen. Let’s not wait 18 months for something to happen. There is no perfect time, so the perfect time is now.
