What does future proofing really mean to you and your business?

Future Proofing is about asking what have I learnt in the past, where are we going in the future and what are we doing today to future-proof the business?  Think about this as a conveyor belt. It’s always moving. If you are constantly reviewing the past, are analytical and aligned with the future, and you are constantly executing today, that is future-proofing your business. Hence planning and execution are where the game is won.

ARE VS COULD BE

There is an element of planning that is absolutely critical, but today is critical too. The ability to measure and capture and do something today is vitally important, you can’t just keep saying we’ll do something soon. You’re not running a business in La La Land. This stuff must come out of your head at some point and become reality. It’s business, and stuff happens.

When constantly being brutal about where you are now rather than where you could be now, you must have a slight dissatisfaction about where you are now. If you lose that you are going to fail. The moment you think you have ‘made it’ is the moment you start going backwards. You are going to lose the hunger, become complacent, and things will start to slide. You must have a constant thorn in your side that says you could be doing better.

This is when you are striking at the right point. When futureproofing your business, it’s okay to be uncomfortable – in fact, it’s essential.

This gap between where you are now and where you could be is never going to be bridged as you push forward. It’s a moving target, and you must consider it regularly, not every day but at least every year. This is not the day-to-day stuff. This is measuring 90-day, 6-month, 12-month, 3-year and 5-year outcomes.

You can either be productive and results-oriented every day or not. You cannot wait for the perfect time because it never comes. There’s no room for, Let’s just say we’ll do this and get around to that later. If that is important, that’s what you need to be doing, now. The time is now – right now. You are constantly in now mode.
