How can you be on the lookout 24/7/365 for A-grade employees? What do you do when you find somebody?

Being on the lookout 24/7/365 means being alert to the fact that every person you meet is a potential candidate to work in your business in the future. Whenever you meet any new person in any context – business or personal – at the back of your mind you can make an assessment as to whether they could be part of your team in the future.

Now, this doesn’t mean that when you meet somebody at a dinner party you turn it into a job interview, or when you sign up a new client you also ask for a résumé.

What it does mean is that you always have your radar turned on. When you meet somebody at a dinner party, if you are impressed by them and it seems like they may be somebody who could help your business, at the end of the evening, ask if you could get together for a coffee and a chat.

This system ensures that you become a benchmark business. This is a key fundamental to your long-term success. If you’re not consistently meeting and greeting new people so you can promote existing talent up, you are not going to be able to move yourself up so that you are working at your highest hourly rate and bringing people in under you.

If you take this approach, at all times, you can have a dossier of 10 or 15 people who could be building your organisation at a particular time in the future in a particular role, so when the time comes to fill that role you already have the right person in mind.

Rather than being reactive and hiring the best of a bad bunch, when an opportunity arises you are fully prepared to take advantage of it. If you are not scouting 24/7/365 you are also not in a position to be assessing if the talent you have now is at the level it needs to be.
